Using photographic fictions to suggest mental anxieties, my work relies on the paradox of the photograph’s ability to define a moment, while at the same time act as a tool of deception. small is a series of digital photographs of figurines in staged tableaus. As if performing for the camera, human-like figures are cast as surrogates in an adult fiction. Pouty lips and eyes that droop into a melancholic expression; a mood that is amplified by the uneasiness of an ambiguous space. A once joyful gesture now implies falseness in an environment of soft focus. A rough plastic seam along a bent arm interrupts the narrative with evidence of its manufactured birth.
